COMMUNITY BOATING CONTINUES NE STEM & ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION HUB WITH GRANT FROM 11TH HOUR RACING

Executive Director of Community Boating Center John O’Flaherty commented, “We are thrilled to serve as the first national “Center of Excellence” for this Reach Hub initiative and deeply thankful for the personal vision and enormous generosity of the people at 11th Hour Racing for this opportunity. CBC is an experienced anchor program that offers an immediate channel to increase participation and offer a sustainable, long-term model that can be replicated in other cities. Focusing on strategic partner-building and mentoring, CBC will connect with university partners, schools, and STEM companies to create a strong STEM foundation and pathway to STEM careers for Reach participants.”

Community Boating Center - Reach “Center of Excellence” Receives Grant From 11th Hour Racing To Support STEM & Environmental Education

11th Hour Racing, a program established by The Schmidt Family Foundation, has chosen Community Boating Center (CBC) to receive a grant to continue as the first Reach “Center of Excellence” for a NE Hub of STEM partners. 11th Hour Racing specializes in fostering strategic partnerships within the sailing and marine communities to promote collaborative systemic change for the health of our marine environment.

Community Boating Center (CBC) is honored for the opportunity to continue to build upon the measured success of this collaborative Reach NE Hub model. The overarching goal is to increase quality STEM education and inspire future environmental stewards through sailing.

Community Boating Center (CBC), the first Reach “Center of Excellence”, will provide key mentoring activities and support NE “Reach Centers” and new programs in the NE region by demonstrating and sharing knowledge and experience. CBC will continue to develop best practices and tool-kits for programs ranging from those at an initial stage of implementing Reach, to mentoring more advanced organizations. This innovative collaborative model will continue to bring more awareness to environmental and ocean stewardship through an array of mentoring sessions, STEM events, curriculum development, strategic partnering, resource development, assessment, program equipment purchases, and mentor sailing training.

Executive Director of Community Boating Center John O’Flaherty commented, “We are thrilled to serve as the “Center of Excellence” for this Reach Hub initiative and deeply thankful for the personal vision and enormous generosity of the people at 11th Hour Racing for the opportunity for all of us to continue this important work.”

About Reach
Developed in 2012, US Sailing’s Reach initiative was created as a national education venture to inspire schools and sailing programs to utilize sailing to teach STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) subjects and stewardship to youth. Originally piloted at Community Boating Center through the support of the John B. “Jim” and Nelly Llanos Kilroy Foundation, Reach has established itself as a pioneer and leader in the integration of STEM education with sailing. A framework of curriculum has been cultivated into a very powerful and unique program that connects with kids from all backgrounds around the country. Reach has also engaged with networks of interested organizations worldwide and is now being positioned as a model for sailing and STEM programming in international sailing communities.
