Community Boating Center (CBC) has announced that sailors from its youth and inner-city outreach programs raced with America’s Cup world-champion Team Alinghi professionals, Wednesday, June 23, 2004 as part of the UBS Trophy event in Newport, RI.

The America’s Cup-style racing returned to Newport June 19-26 featuring spectator-friendly, shoreline courses that allowed the general public to view the races. Community Boating Center partnered with Sail Newport and Shake-a-Leg to ensure a further connection to community sailing by providing youth sailors from each program to sail with top Alinghi crew members aboard classic 12-meter yachts on the regatta’s mid-week layover day. CBC youth sailors from Paul Cuffee School, a maritime charter school and CBC sailing partner, represented Community Boating Center.

John O’Flaherty, Executive Director of CBC commented, “Community Boating Center is committed to providing access to sailing for everyone in Rhode Island. We’re excited to continue in our role of bringing sailing and America’s Cup racing back to the people of the Ocean State.”

Community Boating Center (CBC) is a non-profit, 501c3 recreational organization offering all members of the community an opportunity to sail. Located in India Point Park, CBC provides outreach, sailing lessons, and affordable access to the Providence waterfront. Gifts of cash or property to CBC may be treated as charitable donations for Federal Tax purposes.
