J CLASS REGATTA FEATURES CBC YOUTH SAILORS

jclass yacht

The Community Boating Center (CBC) has partnered with the J Class Association to provide CBC youth sailors to experience the J Class Newport Regatta, June 18, 2011.

Two sailors have been chosen to participate from CBC in a competitive selection process. Each candidate was judged on the merits of their submission of a written essay describing the past, present, future, and Rhode Island connection associated with J Class racing. Selected candidates will meet J Class crew, have VIP on-the-water viewing access to a classic J Class yacht regatta, and gain an appreciation of the impact that J Class yacht racing has on Rhode Island.

John O’Flaherty, Executive Director of CBC, commented “Rhode Island has strong past, present, and future interest in these iconic yachts. We look forward to helping all Rhode Island residents appreciate the unique strengths and potential benefits that we all share in promoting the Ocean State as a world-renowned leader in marine related skills, connections, and resources.”

In 2000 the new J Class Association was formed to promote, protect and develop the interests of these wonderful yachts. The Owners met in England and formed the J Class Association to protect the interests of the Class, present and future. Class Rules were established for the construction of Replica Rebuilds from original plans. Shamrock V underwent a major refit at Pendennis in Falmouth under the supervision of the Dijkstra office. Today, there are now five yachts sailing with three more under construction.

Community Boating Center (CBC) is a non-profit, 501c3 recreational organization offering all members of the community an opportunity to sail. Located in India Point Park, CBC provides outreach, sailing lessons and affordable access to the Providence waterfront. Gifts of cash or property to CBC may be treated as charitable donations for Federal Tax purposes.
