SENATOR SHELDON WHITEHOUSE TO SAIL AT COMMUNITY BOATING WITH YOUTH IN CITY
SAIL-OFF, US SAILING OUTREACH REGATTA
The Community Boating Center (CBC) has announced that Senator Sheldon Whitehouse will sail with CBC youth sailors for the US Sailing City Sail-Off Regatta on 8/26 from 2 - 3 pm.
The Community Boating Center (CBC) has partnered with US Sailing, the national governing body of sailing, to create a pilot program with the goal of serving as a national model for inner-city outreach initiatives.
Funded by a grant from the John B. and Nelly Llanos Kilroy Foundation, the program will foucs on quality programming specific to the challenges of engaging inner-city youth in the sport of sailing. Quality standards adapted from the Providence After-School Alliance (PASA) will be matched with US Sailing instructional materials and best practices to help ensure consistent, high quality programming. Local youth from the Fox Point Boys and Girls Club and the Washington Park Community Center will meet twice per week each, four days per week total, for four weeks from 8/2 - 8/26. The culmination of the program will include a City Sail-Off regatta for bragging rights as Top-Dawg sailors of Providence, RI, capital of the Ocean State.
John OFlaherty, Executive Director of CBC, commented Were truly honored to have Senator Whitehouse sail at CBC and serve as an inspirational national leader for our Ocean State youth. Were also thrilled to serve as a basis for a national model to ensure that community sailing programs nationwide have access to high-quality programming standards for all deserving youth sailors.
