Community Boating Center awarded Providence After School Alliance Grant

Community Boating Center (CBC) is proud to announce that their “TreasureTracker” program has been awarded an After-School Program Grant from the Providence After School Alliance (PASA). TreasureTracker, offered twice per week on Tuesday and Thursdays from April 21 to May 28, 2009, will serve Providence middle school aged children, ages 11-14.

TreasureTracker is an innovative program combining the technical allure and dynamic fun of GPS (Global Positioning System) geocaching treasure hunts with the engaging nature of the maritime environment. This popular initiative provides middle school youth with high quality after-school opportunities that link students to their environment, heritage, and academic skills associated with basic electronic navigation.

CBC has developed structured “treasure trails” of historic landmarks and points of interest connecting Narragansett Bay and WaterPlace Park. This unique effort challenges and empowers middle school youth who may not immediately connect to boating and the water to embrace their interest and aptitude for technology, gain an appreciation for Rhode Island’s maritime heritage, and absorb underlying lessons in academics and life.

The Providence After School Alliance was launched by Providence Mayor David N. Cicilline as a public-private venture to develop a citywide system to substantially increase high-quality, affordable out-of-school time enrichment opportunities for Providence’s children and youth.

John O’Flaherty, Executive Director of CBC commented, “Community Boating is honored to be involved as an innovator in offering quality, engaging after-school programming to Providence.”

Community Boating Center (CBC) is a non-profit, 501c3 recreational organization offering all members of the community an opportunity to sail. Located in India Point Park, CBC provides outreach, sailing lessons and affordable access to the Providence waterfront. Gifts of cash or property to CBC may be treated as charitable donations for Federal Tax purposes.

Participation is limited with first preference given to West End/ South Side Providence residents. Youth from other Providence areas may be placed on a waiting list.
