Community Boating Center has announced that Paul Simas, a CBC Head Sailing Instructor, has helped the University of Rhode Island (URI) place second in the World Collegiate Keelboat Championships held in La Baule, France October 24th through November 3rd.

The URI Sailing Team, for the ninth time in the last seventeen years earned the right to represent the United States in the World Collegiate Keelboat Championships held off the coast of La Baule, France between October 24th and November 3rd, 2004.

The World Cup brings together over twenty Collegiate National Sailing Championship teams from throughout the world with only one entry allowed per country. No other University team representing any other country has been selected as frequently or been as successful as the Rams who now boast a 1st (1990), three 2nds (1992, 1993, 2004) and two 3rd place finishes (1988, 1998) in their nine previous appearances at the Worlds.

The six day competition consisted of an overnight race as well as several Olympic triangles and distance races at various sites along the French Atlantic Coast. Competitors sailed in 35 foot Jeanneau One Designs provided by the regatta organizing committee.

Paul and the URI Sailing Keelboat team worked hard to raise the necessary funds to cover expenses of the Championship Campaign as they strove to represent their school, state, and country at the 2004 Worlds in France. Corporate donations and/or contributions of sailing gear and clothing items to outfit Team USA for future campaigns are welcomed. The regatta, classified by the International Sailing Federations as a Category B event, allows for extensive advertising on the hull, sails and crew.

The URI Sailing team has a strong tradition of competitive excellence and a rich history of alumni that includes several Olympians and 26 All-Americans. The team competes in the New England Intercollegiate Sailing Association (NEISA) and sails out of the URI Sailing Center in Wakefield, RI. The sailing fleet includes 18 Vanguard Flying Juniors, Tech Dinghies, Etchells 22’s, a J-24 and several power boats. Learn more at
